How do I grow my hair out?

I currently have short hair and want to grow it out to at least shoulder length so that I can put it up etc. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to look after it, how long I should get it trimmed. And any good styles for a heart shaped face?

Sounds crazy, but go to the feed store and get Mane %26amp; Tail shampoo and conditioner for horses. It may take a while, but it really works. I'm from Texas and I have done this!!
